Tricia Devereaux of Evil Angel DVD organized a dinner for Adult DVD Talk members and industry folks living in Southern California. It was held at Yankee Doodles on the Santa Monica Promenade. Attending were: Tricia Devereaux, Lee Carver, Evil Rip, Saki, Lunacy, Cal444, Mike John, John Strong, Wanker Wang, Roger T. Pipe (of RogReviews.com), Erik Everhard, Constance Le, and Alex Ladd. Over ribs, wings, pasta, pizza, and a lot of beer and other adult beverages, porn was freely discussed. Among the topics I overheard:
- Religious icons as dildos (prompted by Lunacy's proud purchase of a Jesus action figure at Urban Outfitters -- and, no, she doesn't plan on using it for that!)
- How to shoot porn when the homeowner's association disapproves
- Filming a male masturbation video and the paradox of a guy who can't get hard in a solo scene
- The challenge of counterfeit and export DVDs
- How the Europeans are much more relaxed when it comes to sex and other observations from this year's Venus Fair in Berlin
- The economics of adult DVDs
- Trying to sell to the big retail chains
- Taking the plunge and releasing DVD-only releases (no VHS)
- Editing porn when you have kids (tricky)
- Star Wars action figures (no, not for intimate use either!)
- Those darn Canadians! :-)
- Mike John's story of how he got involved in the adult business
- This year's crop of AVN nominees and what the reviewers think about them
- EA's upcoming DVD extras (perhaps a new solo scene with Tricia?)
- The industry's view on RAME and ADTalk, fan feedback, and how often they visit ADT.
- The problem of leaving a video camera out in the rain (oopsie!)
- Favorite performers and the ones who are the easiest to work with
- Mainstream DVDs and renting from the big chains
- Big, natural tits and who likes 'em
- And of course, upcoming projects
My favorite moment of the night came when Tricia was casually say, "So I was directing this gay masturbation video..." as the waitress was clearing dishes from the table. Neither batted an eye or skipped a beat as Tricia continued to tell her story -- just another thing that could only happen in California!
It was a great evening and a preview of what's in store for the ADT Party in Vegas at the beginning of 2003. There were a few people we missed (you know who you are): you're buying drinks next time! Thanks to Tricia for organizing the dinner and to everyone who braved the nightmare known as Saturday night Santa Monica traffic to be there!
